Usability testing of YLE homepage

Liisa Siitonen, Executive Producer at YLE New Services :

What was the starting point and objective of the project?

We were creating a new concept, a new angle for the YLE website . We wanted to gather feedback with the help of user tests before moving to the beta phase.

How did Etnoteam help you to resolve the situation?

The test implementation methods reflected the result of discussions between YLE and Etnoteam. The tests concentrated on evaluating what kind of user experience the new version of the homepage would create, and on comparing the new look with the existing homepage.

The tests were conducted in Helsinki, Seinäjoki and Kuopio: YLE has to serve the whole of Finland - the metropolitan area is only a part of our audience; most of our audience live in the provinces.

What was the outcome of the project?

We received an excellent service from Etnoteam, and the end result was a great success. Our people also observed the tests on the spot, and the sessions were very useful in terms of the various solutions that we had been considering and for which we needed some further specifications.

The homepage was modified based on the usability walkthrough before we proceeded to the beta phase. We had an open beta phase inside YLE first, when we gathered a lot of additional feedback that was also taken into consideration. The public beta phase was shorter, but we also received feedback during this phase and further fine-tuned the homepage.

Conducting the usability testing was absolutely vital: you become blind to your own output when you work on it for a long time. User feedback was useful, so we will certainly be utilising Etnoteam's services again in the future.

Yleisradio Oy (YLE) is Finland’s national public service broadcasting company that produces content for TV, radio, mobile devices and the Internet. As the communications company with the best nationwide coverage, YLE supplies everyone in Finland with uniform news, experiences, education and entertainment: in 2009, 98% of Finns utilised YLE’s offering weekly. Yle.fi is one of the most popular websites in Finland.

Etnoteam conducted usability testing for Yle.fi. The object was to find out how well the new website concept served the target group: the relevance of contents, the ability to reflect topicality and the ease of navigation of the website. To gain a complete regional view, the tests were arranged in three different cities. Etnoteam interviewed target group users, and studied the strengths of the new concept compared with the existing one.
